the one and only Tony blackburn

Tony Blackburn is the perfect fit for hosting this tribute to the greats of the past 40 years. Tony was with them all, and was once credited by the great Stevie Wonder for bringing ‘Shout’ to the UK.

What’s tony all about?

Tony is simply a legend of the airwaves. He has become a household name through his DJ-ing and TV shows, inspiring the cult of the DJ. He is fondly remembered for the BBC’s world famous “Top of the Pops” from the late 60s and throughout the 1970s. It was pirate radio that was to give Tony his first break, which in turn led to the creation of Radio 1, inspired by a generation of young listeners desperate to have access to popular music created on both sides of the Atlantic. His debut was on Radio Caroline in 1964, and he went on to present the first ever soul programme in the Uk on Radio London. When Radio 1 launched in 1967, Tony was the first DJ on the new network, at first presenting the daily breakfast show and then taking over the morning show for many years. Another first for him was to launch Capital Gold, presenting soul shows.

Tony has been an ever present in the growth and development of popular music. In 2010 he took over the enduring Pick of the Pops show, once the province of another radio great, Alan Freeman. Tony can now be heard on Sunday afternoons on the Greatest Hits network across the north of England, Thames Radio across London on DAB and online on Saturday evenings, with his Soul Party and his regular KMFM show on Sundays. Live entertainment is Tony’s joy and his energy and enthusiasm are boundless. He has just announced a 17 venue tour of BBC Radio 2’s popular “Sounds of the 60s”, bringing the show from the studio to the stage for the first time.

We are delighted to have Tony on our line up for Legends Festival 2019!
